Are Legacy Systems Ruining Your Project Efficiencies?
A reliance on legacy systems – such as email and paper storage – may seem like the most obvious way to project manage a construction or rail delivery, mainly because it’s been the modus operandi for years.
But, the key to a modern, efficient, and cohesive plan truly lies with a digitised workflow solution. Our Head of Client Partnerships, James Connolly, takes a closer look.
Embracing The Power of Technology
Simply ‘doing what we’ve always done’ is a mantra we hear far too often among the construction and rail sectors – with much of the construction industry still lacking a comprehensive approach to project data management. However, it’s those forward-thinking organisations – which embrace the opportunity to introduce solutions dedicated to improving cross-site communications and efficiency – that will ultimately steal a march on the competition. This is particularly pertinent in the wake of the pandemic and as we shift to a world which is embracing the power technology. Don’t just take our word for it, though.
Digitised Workflow Data
We recently shared our VolkerRail case study which took a closer look at how the 70-year-old organisation is managing field surveys using eviFile technologies – allowing the firm to streamline project deliveries, enable better-informed decision-making, and drive continuous improvement.
Since entering the construction market in 1935, VolkerRail has become one of the UK’s leading multi-disciplinary railway infrastructure contractors; delivering contracts valued at more than £1 billion across the UK’s national rail network.
The initial pilot project was to capture survey information relating to train protection and warning systems (TPWS), cable routes, signal wiring and access points.
Configured to provide a range of custom reports in real-time, the interface allows users to monitor overall survey progress as well as the status of individual data collection processes.
As part of the firm’s digital transformation project – dubbed ‘Tomorrow Now’ – eviFile was tasked with alleviating the firm’s reliance on email and paper-based storage systems, with the introduction of a digitised workflow solution.
Thousands of geolocated data-points, supported by imagery, are now being securely captured using mobile devices.
This facilitates the production of detailed reports while providing accurate data to support future construction and installation projects.
So, How Can Tech Aid My Project Management?
An efficient data eco-system allows relevant parties to identify project data requirements from the offset.
Furthermore, using a Target Project Operating Model (TPOM), information can be mandated and supported by a supply chain – meaning the ‘heavy lifting’ elements of project data are shared and automated.
Not only that, but live tracking capabilities enable planners, project managers, and field operatives to remain informed via relevant, automated updates, which help to maximise efficiency and reduce mistakes.
